In Migori County’s public health sector, Hon. Caleb Oduor Opondi has steadily built a reputation as a hands-on, people-centred leader.
As the County Executive Committee Member for Health, Opondi has become one of the key faces behind Governor Ochilo Ayacko’s health agenda—an agenda focused on bringing services closer to the people, improving access, and restoring dignity to vulnerable residents.
Under his watch, Migori has recorded visible progress in healthcare access. The county has constructed, equipped, and commissioned 22 new dispensaries within three years, with plans for 14 more facilities. This is not just construction; it is a deliberate move to reduce the long distances residents travel to seek basic medical attention.
Opondi has also been at the centre of countywide health outreach programmes targeting over 50,000 residents across all sub-counties. These outreaches offer free medical check-ups, immunization, essential medicines, mobile clinics, maternal health services, and community health education.
His leadership has also shown a strong human face. In partnership with Walkabout Foundation UK, the Migori Health Department flagged off free wheelchair distribution at Migori Referral Hospital, giving persons with disabilities renewed mobility, dignity, and hope.
On maternal health, Opondi has supported the Birth Companion Inclusion Strategy, a groundbreaking framework that recognizes the role of trained birth companions and former traditional birth attendants in improving safe delivery outcomes. This places Migori among counties taking practical steps to reduce maternal and newborn risks.
The department has also been active in HIV response, adolescent health, and the fight against the triple threat of teenage pregnancy, new HIV infections, and gender-based violence. Migori’s partnership with national health agencies shows a county willing to confront its health challenges directly.
Opondi’s performance has not gone unnoticed. He has reportedly been honoured as the “Best County Executive Committee Member,” a recognition that reflects his growing public profile and the visible work happening in the health docket.
His strength lies in practical delivery: facilities, outreach, partnerships, mobility support, maternal health reforms, and community-based healthcare.
